Top story — R-454B is the new normal, and it’s pricier
The A2L transition is done: new equipment now ships with low-GWP refrigerant like R-454B, and the first-fill costs more than R-410A ever did — fewer suppliers, demand still catching up, and the factory charge baked in before your distributor even sees it (The Furnace Outlet). The result is showing up on customer quotes: A/C replacement pricing is running roughly 10–12% higher this summer versus prior years (MarketingCode). The sticker path is steep — R-454B ran $650–$700 per 20-lb cylinder in spring 2025 and spiked as high as $700–$2,000 at the peak, up from $344.94 in 2021 (The Furnace Outlet). Prices eased through late 2025 as supply caught up, but the floor is higher than the R-410A era ever was.

The Tip — Line-item the refrigerant
Put refrigerant on the quote as its own line, every time. Two reasons: it protects your close rate (the customer sees why the number moved, instead of assuming you marked it up), and it keeps you from silently eating a cost that’s up double digits. Write a 30-second script for your techs: “New law, new refrigerant, safer and greener — here’s what it adds.” Transparency closes A2L jobs; surprise kills them.
